Margaret Amelia Horton was the seventh child of Richard Horton & Martha Elizabeth Stone born November 27th, 1890 at 15 Great Bridge & christened December 28th, 1890 at St Andrew’s, West Bromwich, Staffs.
Margaret attended Christ Church Infant School until 1897 when she transferred to Christ Church upper school. She left there in December 1901 & it was noted in the School’s Admission Register that she went to Wednesbury.
In 1901 the Margaret was living at 37 New St, West Bromwich with her parents & 4 brothers.
At the time of the 1911 census Margaret was a boarder at the Church of England Training College St Mary's Hall, St Georges Place, Cheltenham, training to be a teacher.
The 1939 Register reveals that Margaret Amelia Horton was living at 25 Balmoral Road, in the borough of Doncaster, West Yorks. With her was her widowed mother, Martha Elizabeth. Margaret was an elementary school teacher. It was also noted that she was an air raid warden.
In 1945, at the time of her mother’s death Margaret was living at 35 Hillswood Ave, Leek.
Margaret married Alfred Ernest Smith on December 2nd, 1957 at the Registry Office, Spilsby, Lincs. Witnesses at the wedding were M B Sheldon & A E Coulson. At the time of the wedding Margaret was a retired school teacher of 12 Green Lane, Seacroft, Skegness & Alfred was a retired baker. Alfred was born May 23rd,1882 at Spilsby, Lincs, the son of John Smith, a shoemaker. Margaret was 67 & Alfred was 73 years of age at the time of the wedding. Alfred’s previous marriage had been dissolved.
Alfred died in Jan-March, 1970, his death being registered at Spilsby.
Margaret died on December 25th, 1972 at 12 Green Lane, Skegness. Her nephew
Denys Horton of Billinghay, Lincs was granted administration of the estate as shown in
the London Gazette of February 8th, 1973. Margaret's estate, which amounted to £12,462 was divided between her nephews & nieces, namely Denys Horton, Frances Mary Reid, Richard Frederick Horton, Isabella Mary Horton & Winifred Ellen Horton.
